Health

Being Healthy

A person's state of health shapes their life opportunities such as education, employment and social participation. People with poor health often have more difficulty finding a job and keeping it, so are more likely to be poor and in need of services. People experiencing disadvantages such as inadequate housing, unemployment and poverty often experience poor health as well but cannot afford adequate health services including preventive care. People with physical and/or mental disabilities also face social exclusion if they have difficulty accessing services and workplaces. People with mental illness frequently experience housing problems and form a significant proportion of the homeless population.

  • Challenges
  • Although the health level of Sydney residents generally is very good, and life expectancy is very high, some groups, especially Indigenous Australians and older Australians, suffer much poorer health. Risk-taking by youth leads to a high number of avoidable deaths and is one of Sydney's biggest health problems. Among people receiving social services, almost 10% cannot afford medical treatment, almost one-quarter cannot afford to buy prescribed medicines, and almost half cannot afford dental treatment if needed. Indigenous Australians are over-represented in almost every health problem or risk area.

  • Facts
  • Transport accidents make up a much higher proportion of all deaths among people under 25 (31%) than those over 25 (1%).

In Sydney, 85% of residents live with the impact of mental illness, either their own or that of a family member or friend.

Indigenous Australians have a life expectancy 17 years lower than non-Indigenous Australians

  • Think
  • Is risk-taking among youth such as drinking, using drugs and driving recklessly inevitable/unavoidable?

How might we better support communities and families to play an active role in supporting people with a mental illness?

How can we meet the health needs of priority groups in our community such as Indigenous Australians, older people, migrants and refugees, and people with a mental illness?
