Belonging

Belonging

A sense of belonging to a harmonious community makes most people feel better, happier and safer. Community participation can be informal day to day interaction with and concern for others in the neighbourhood or formal, such as voting, participation in political or civic groups or organised community activities such as volunteering. Regular involvement can build stronger communities, sense of belonging and bring benefits to health. The inability to access services (employment, financial services, housing) places (through transportation) or devices (the internet), for example because of disability, illness or inadequate language skills, can hinder participation, leading to isolation and social exclusion.

  • Challenges
  • Only 71.3% of migrant households can call on support outside their household in times of crisis, compared with 92.8% of the general population. People from low income areas are less likely to have Internet access, and those who speak languages other than English at home are least likely to have Internet access. Research shows Sydney's northern and eastern suburbs, with relatively little cultural diversity, are most accepting of it, while the south-western suburbs and outer "commuter group" is the least tolerant, showing strong opposition to diversity and multiculturalism and high levels of acknowledged personal racism. Sydney has the lowest proportion of adults participating in unpaid voluntary work of any Australian capital city.

  • Facts
  • In 2006 only 22.3% of people born overseas had internet access in Sydney, and 20.4% of people who spoke a language other than English at home, compared with 44% of people born in Australia.

In 2006, 16.2% of adult residents in Sydney undertook some unpaid voluntary work, compared with 35% of all Australians. 69% of people in Sydney who commute to work use private vehicles.

  • What kind of activities can help build better neighbourhoods?

How can communities encourage closer interaction and understanding between groups from different cultural backgrounds to build community harmony?

What kind of volunteering opportunities in your community would interest you?
