Being Safe - My Story

My Story

Jack is a 13 year old boy living in Sydney's south-west with his mother and two brothers in public housing. The limited space and safety concerns of his mother mean Jack's older sister lives away from the family. As a sole parent, Jack's mother struggles to balance work and home responsibilities. Her ability to earn a steady income has also been limited by her tuberculosis. The family's unstable financial and housing situation has forced them to move very frequently. Moving into an area with high crime led Jack into minor criminal activity and the juvenile justice system. Counselling identified his challenging behaviours such as conduct disorder and ADHD. Ongoing counselling and targeted educational support offers the prospect that Jack will overcome his behavioural challenges and work towards his dream of being a mechanical engineer.
