Belonging - My Story

My Story

Thomas, 55, is a Sudanese refugee in the western suburbs. In Sudan, Thomas has strong professional qualifications and experience as a high school principal for almost 10 years. He is now struggling to find employment, competing with those who have local knowledge and local work experience, especially in the current labour market. Thomas' long-standing unemployment strains the family's ability to pay bills and rent. While Thomas is mainly concerned with meeting their immediate needs, he also personally suffers from his inability to work. Living in a new country without a recognised role in the community, Thomas feels isolated, excluded and without an identity. He volunteers his skills and expertise as an active member of the Sudanese refugee community. While Thomas recognises the value of his voluntary efforts, he looks forward to finding paid work and being a contributing member of the community.
