Housing - My Story

My Story

Michael is 53 years old and lives on the streets of Sydney. Because of his indigenous Australian heritage Michael was taken away from his family from the age of six. Later he became heavily involved in crime and spent nine years in prison. Despite a disrupted formal education, he has trade skills such as roofing, bricklaying and tiling. However, Michael has been unable to hold down a steady job. He suffers from mild schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder, which affects his ability to live and work with others. Michael has been homeless for nine years with little support to manage his mental condition. He accepts his situation yet is hopeful that he will have a stable home to live comfortably in old age. He dreams of living in a small space where he can paint, sculpt and express himself freely.
