This message guide is intended for anyone aiming to build public support for a more progressive, effective and accessible social security system in Australia.

It was developed following in-depth message research conducted by Common Cause Australia on behalf of Economic Justice Australia, in collaboration with a steering committee representing a diverse collection of organisations advocating for a better system.

The two main policy asks we tested with audiences in this project were a) raising rates, especially of unemployment payments; and b) abolishing compulsory activities. The insights gained by the research, however, will be useful across the broader spectrum of progressive policy work on social security.

We encourage you to use the tips and messages outlined in this guide to inform all your messaging on the topic of social security. Whether you are having conversations with members of the community or members of Parliament, crafting a policy paper or a social media post, responding to a funding proposal or questions from a journalist, the more we engage the helpful frames outlined in this guide, the more we will build support for a social security system that provides stability, security and self-direction for all.
