Title: Values Map and Definitions

Published: 2022

This two page handout includes the full Shalom Schwartz values map along with a list of definitions and values groups.

The values map is based on the Schwartz theory of basic values developed through decades of research and hundreds of cross-cultural studies. It maps 57 consistently-occurring human values based on data from over 60,000 people around the world.

Rather than occurring randomly, these values were found to be related to each other. Some were unlikely to be prioritised strongly at the same time by the same individual; others were often prioritised strongly at the same time.

The values map represents these relationships visually. The closer any one value ‘point’ is to another, the more likely that both will be of similar importance to the same person. By contrast, the further a value is from another, the less likely that both will be seen as similarly important.

The accompanying list of values definitions also shows how each value is grouped into high-order values groups including into intrinsic and extrinsic values.
